Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
